Paolo Cascone, architect & founder COdesignLab, Napels (IT), “The African Fabbers school”, 21 November 2016, 19h30 – 21h00, Campus Boekentoren, J. Plateaustraat 22, B-9000 Gent, aud E (introduction by prof. Johan Lagae)
Abstract: In this lecture, Paolo Cascone will discuss the theory by practice approach of the African Fabbers project and the challenge of creating innovative educational models for a new generation of architects, designers and artisans. After the urban fabrication laboratories developed for the recent Dakar and Marrakech Biennale, COdesignLab has elaborated the principles of the African Fabbers School as a natural evolution of more than ten years of practice in both research and educational projects in Africa (Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Ghana, Morocco etc.). From post-vernacular design to digital fabrication with local materials, from community oriented projects to self-construction processes the project intends to respond to the lack of schools of architecture and design in Africa. Such interdisciplinary approach investigates on the new role of architects and designers as part of a choral process of bridging traditional and advanced technologies with the aim of transforming African cities reconciling nature with tekné.
This event is the start of a lecture series on the theme “Architectural and Urban Sustainability in Africa. Current discourses and practices. A critical evaluation”, which is initiated by Johan Lagae & Michiel Dehaene, with the support of VLIR-UOS, the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning (UGent) and the Ghent Africa Platform (GAP). The next lectures will take place on December 7th 2016 (Prof. Bradley Rink, University of Western Cape, Cape Town (SA)) and medio February 2017 (Prof. Jiat Hwee Chang, University of Singapore).
