The Department of Architecture & Urban Planning belongs to the Faculty of Engineering of Ghent University. Firstly, a department is in charge of scientific research and scientific services in a particular discipline: the research team of our department consists of some ten professors and some twenty assistant professors and research staff with a research grant awarded by the Research Foundation Flanders or the UGent Special Research Fund.
Together with professors from other departments of the Faculty of Engineering and from other faculties, the members of the Department of Architecture & Urban Planning ensure the education of the ‘Bachelor of Engineering: Architecture’, the ‘Master of Engineering: Architecture’, and the ‘Master of Urbanism and Urban Planning’. During the past few years, approximately 500 students have enrolled in these study programmes.
The study programme leading to the title of engineer-architect consists of three equivalent components: scientific and (construction) technical subjects, theory and history of architecture and urbanism, and architectural design with the design-related subjects. The design training, which is at the centre of the study programme, is borne by a team of some twenty professors and teaching assistants, most of them being partly employed at UGent, and all of them being active in the profession as well.
A team of administrative and technical staff members staffs the secretariat and ensures the logistics and technical support of research and education – particularly design education in the studios. Three staff members are in charge of the Departmental Library.
